FAREWELL
CRY
African Wild Dog
Endangered
POPULATION
There are only around 1,400 adult African wild dogs left in the wild, making them the second most endangered carnivore in Africa after the Ethiopian wolf.
THE THREAT
Habitat fragmentation forces packs into conflict with humans and exposes them to diseases carried by domestic dogs. Snares, road accidents, and retaliatory killing by farmers add to the pressure on an already critically small population living across 39 fragmented subpopulations.
ABOUT THIS PAINTING
"Alert, ears forward, listening for the call of his pack. It doesn’t come. That silence is what this painting is about and why it is called ‘Farewell Cry’. It broke my heart to paint it.”
THE HOPE
Painted Dog Conservation and the African Wildlife Conservation Fund work to protect wild dog populations through anti-poaching, community engagement, and the rehabilitation of injured animals.
