POPULATION
All 17 species of red colobus monkey are threatened with extinction. Thirteen are already listed as Critically Endangered or Endangered, making them the most threatened group of African monkeys.
THE THREAT
Red colobus are among the first species to disappear when forests are hunted out. Bound to the high canopy, they now only survive in small isolated pockets. When forests break apart, families cannot reunite, populations shrink and recovery becomes increasingly unlikely.
ABOUT THIS PAINTING
"I painted the red colobus because almost nobody knows their name. They are stunning, yet they are vanishing quietly."
THE HOPE
The IUCN's Red Colobus Conservation Action Plan, the first of its kind for any African monkey group, sets out a roadmap for preventing extinctions and preserving the tropical forests these animals depend on.
