Chimpanzee

Endangered

POPULATION

Fewer than 340,000 chimpanzees are estimated to remain in the wild, fragmented across increasingly isolated forest patches across West and Central Africa.

THE THREAT

Habitat loss, bushmeat hunting, and the illegal pet trade are the primary threats. Chimpanzees share approximately 98% of their DNA with humans, yet we continue to destroy the forests they depend on at a rate that outpaces any conservation effort.

ABOUT THIS PAINTING

“No background, no distance. Just eyes that look back at you like a mirror. I wanted the intimacy to feel almost uncomfortable. The kind of image that makes you ask, what, exactly, separates us from them.”

THE HOPE

The Jane Goodall Institute and the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance work across Africa to protect wild chimpanzees and rehabilitate those rescued from the illegal wildlife trade.
