Endangered
POPULATION
In the late 1970s, 15,000 Grevy's zebra roamed East Africa. Today, fewer than 3,100 remain, a decline of over 80% in less than 50 years.
THE THREAT
Habitat degradation, competition with livestock for water and grazing, drought, and disease outbreaks have combined to push this species to the brink. They are now found only in northern Kenya and small pockets of Ethiopia, and are rarer than the black rhino.
ABOUT THIS PAINTING
"The stripes of a Grevy's zebra are unique to each individual, like fingerprints. I wanted this painting to feel like a portrait of one specific animal, not just a zebra."
THE HOPE
The global population is now considered stable thanks to community-led conservation programmes in northern Kenya, but with fewer than 3,100 individuals, the situation remains precarious.
